The development of the Japanese railway network commenced shortly after the country opened its borders to formal international contact after a shogunate-imposed isolation of about 250 years, and was initiated (along with many other changes to Japanese society at the time) so that Japan could achieve rapid modernization. The Japan Railways Group, more commonly known as JR Group (JRグループ, Jeiāru Gurūpu), consists of seven for-profit companies ( kabushiki gaisha) that took over most of the assets and operations of the government-owned Japanese National Railways on April 1, 1987. Once you’ve visited, and gotten lost a handful of times, it probably won’t surprise you to learn that this is the busiest train station in the world. Servicing around 3.6 million passengers daily, the station is so hectic that in 2016 the East Japan Railway company unveiled a new app specifically designed to get around this single station.
